The Princess in the Mirror
Three brothers, storytellers who own half a cart (the half that doesn't turn), climb a palace wall one moonlit night to tell a princess stories. Three years of friendship later, she announces she will marry one of them. Her father, King Avner, who invents ancient wisdom on the spot and believes every word of it, gives them one year. She gives them one rule: bring back the most precious gift in the world.
What follows involves a flying carpet, a magic mirror, a single apple, a four-hundred-year-old enchantress, a carpet merchant who laughs before the joke is over, a guard who sleeps standing up with his eyes open, and Mama, who never appears and is the most feared character in the play. All of it is told by the Royal Gardener, who would like it on the record that the whole thing is her fault.
An ancient Jewish folktale from Persia, interpreted through modern verse by Henry-Cameron Allen, for listeners of every age. The laughs come quick, and the quiet moments are allowed to be quiet.
